Shared note | John Wilmot is the subject of the portrait by Rembrandt Peale. Horatio Jones Brewer wrote; "This is a portrait of John Wilmot, son of John Wilmot and Ann McClellan, who was born in Annapolis in 1778. After attaining manhood he removed to the city of Baltimore where he resided at the breaking out of the War of 1812 with the English. In that war he was a captain in 5th Maryland Regiment and took part in the battle of North Point and Bladensburg. At the close of the war he became a merchant in Baltimore. About 1838 he returned to Annapolis and became Adjutant General of the State of Maryland until his death in 1858. This portrait was painted by Rembrandt Peale, the artist, in 1797 or 1798. I fix the date because I have heard my great-aunt Emily Wilmot say that her brother was proud of the picture because it showed him with his hair powdered and cued for the first time after his 19th birthday. Rembrandt Peale and John Wilmot were cousins, related by marriage and both were born in 1778. Rembrandt's father, Charles Wilson Peale, had married Rachel Brewer in 1760." Information on John Wilmot's ancestry is from "Annapolis Maryland Families" by Robert Harry McIntire..vol. 2, page 66. |
