Shared note | Bardizag is situated about 20K SW of Izmith. In English it means "little garden". It was founded by Armenians from the Partizak (Bardizag) village of the Sebastya region of West Armenia in the sixteenth century. At the beginning of the 20th century it was the home of about 17,000 Armenians. It was noted for its pleasant climate, and was the favored vacation spot for many Armenian intellectuals. There were 8 schools, and tobacco and silk production were the predominate industries. Everything was completely destroyed in the 1915 massacres of the Armenians by the Turks. A few survivors escaped and fled to other countries. The original Armenian Partizag was also destroyed in the 1915 massacres. In the 1940's, some fifty families from the Turkish Bardizag returned to the then Soviet Armenia and founded yet a third Partizag in the Talin region. |
