Shared note

Alexander Magruder was born Alexander MacGregor in Scotland, and immigrated about 1652. Presumably, he changed his name when he immigrated to avoid persecution by the English.

Another source states that Alexander Magruder had a second wife named Elizabeth Hawkins, whom he married in 1670. Side-Lights on Maryland History states it is certain that he had two other wives.

Horatio Brewer wrote; "Alexander MacGregor came in 1652, changing his name to Magruder on account of the proscription of the Highland Clans of Scotland for rebellion against the English Crown. His homestead was Alexander's Hope, 700 acres in Calvert County. His will was probated July 25, 1677, leaving his 4000 acre estate to his wife and children; Alexander 2nd, Nathaniel, James, John, Samuel, and others.

There is one genealogy report that traces Alexander's ancestry back to Robert the Bruce of Scotland, and then still further back to Charlemagne..
