Shared note | The info on John Brewer I wife is unconfirmed. It was gathered on the internet, posted by A. Hetzell. Another source has his wife as Mary Cox. Ancestral Records and Portraits states he was born in the south of Wales, emigrated to Massachusetts, settled in Virginia in 1645, and moved to Annapolis, (then Providence), in 1649. He established Brewerton, the family estate, in 1659 with nearly 3,000 acres. The name was spelled Bruere in Wales, and for a while over here. There was also another alternative spelling in England, Briwere, from the town Isle-Briwere, a small parish 7 miles SE of Taunton in Somerset County. In 1202 this parish was led by a William Briwere, who was given title by King John, and who built the Castle of Bridgewater. There are no records linking this man to the John Bruere who emigrated to this country. The above is from "Kin of Mellcene Thurman Smith", P.823. The name is Norman-Flemish, originating at La Bruviere, near Bethune in ancient Flanders. First to come was Drog de Bruviere with William the Conqueror. His name appears on the Battle Abbey Roll. He was married to William's cousin, but had to flee England after killling her in 1086. His descendants remained in England, and one, William Lord Briewere was the legal adviser to King Henry II, who was one of the ones who advised Henry to sign the Magna Carta. Again, there is nothing to link these people to John Bruere. The above is from "A Genealogical History of the Clark and Worth Families", P.380. |
