Shared note

The name Odell originates in the Bedfordshire area of England. One source has Thomas being born in England. There were three Bedfordshire Baronies dating to the time of William the Conqueror. Walter was the son of one of the Flemish adventurers who helped William conquer England. Walter chose one of the higher spots in Bedfordshire for his headquarters, overlooking the Ouse River.

Wahull is an old English descriptive place name. Some researchers have defined it as a high, wooded place. Walter and his family became known as Walter de Wahulle. Others have said that the area was called WoadHill after the plant wood, which was cultivated as a dye in Saxon days.

The name has sen many changes. Among them are Woodhull, Wodhull, Woodhall (1300's), Wodell, Odell (1500's), and Odle soon after that. At no time was it ever O'Dell in England.

In America, Odell, Odle, and O'Dell were sometimes used in the same family, probably due to poor penmanship and poor spelling.

It is possible that Thomas Odell was the son of Henry Odell b abt 1630 in VA.
