Shared note

According to Talbot Magruder Brewer, Ludwig founded the Metropolitan Gas Company in New York City, now part of the ConEd utility company. He came to the USA about 1840-45.

According to Talbot Brewer, there is, (was?), a Zollikoffer family castle in Meerstetten, Switzerland, where the oldest living male Zollikoffer in the world could live and be supported by the other male Zollikoffers. Talbot and Jane once spent the night in the lower, (smaller), castle, even though his name was Brewer, not Zollikoffer. This would have been sometime around 1930, I believe. The castle is called Schloss Altenburg, or Shloss Altenklingen, or perhaps both.

All the information as to the Zollikoffer line in Switzerland was supplied by Talbot Brewer, without documentation. He wrote that the German word Zoli means a custom duty or tax, and Coffer means trunk, and speculates that tax collecting may have been the basis of the family's wealth.
