Shared note | S.R. Durand: "Elbert George Richardson was born January 8, 1864 when his father was pastor of the Methodist church in Marengo, Illinois. He was probably named Elbert after a close friend of his father, Rev. S. H. Elbert, who became vice-president of the Colorado Seminary when Rev. George Richardson was president. He was the first graduate of Denver University in 1887, and the only one in that year. Elbert G. Richardson was the electrical engineer of Cripple Creek Mine and lived for ten years at very high altitude at Victor, Colorado. During this time he became very deaf, which was a handicap to him the rest of his life. When his brother, Fred Richardson established a chicken ranch in San Gabriel, California, he purchased adjacent land. Their younger brother, George Richardson Jr., later established a large chicken ranch for breeding white leghorns on land next to his, so he lived most of his retirement between the ranches of his two brothers. I knew "Uncle Bert" for a few years. He was a very interesting person with a great love of science. Several times I enjoyed looking through a telescope had had built with automatic controls for tracking stars. During the Second World War, he did expert work at the California Institute of Technology, producing lenses for bomb sights to go in warplanes. He died in 1952 at the age of eighty-eight."
