060102 Notes from Tony Gagliani While looking through some papers I had collected, I found an interesting excerpt from the Diary of John Thomas regarding Benjamin Allen (great grandfather). John Thomas had kept a Diary of events concerning the British action against the Acadian French in NS, Canada. It reads : "July 12, 1755, "Pleasant day this day. Doc Whitworth, Kast Frenchwelland Veal hold a consultation on a man wounded in the feet, and take offone of his legs at Camp. He belongs to Captain Lampson and his name isAllen and he came from Connecticut." At the time Benjamin Allen was serving on the Revolutionary side, and wasdischarged on August 8, 1755, and sent back to New England settling atKingston, MA. There he met and married Beza Delano, and had two sons, Oliver Allen andBenjamin Allen. He was a tanner at Kingston, but later joined Col. Joshua Winslow and sailed from Plymouth to Halifax. While in NS, Canada , hesided with Col. Jonathan Eddy , and after the Eddy Rebellion failed, hefled into the wilderness near Cape Tormentine. It was in NB, Canada that he met and married Sarah Somers . Word was sent back to his wife andfamily in Kingston that he had died in the war. If he had actually returned, he would have been hanged for treason, so I suppose he thoughtit best to lay low and remain alive. It just goes to show how historical twists and turns, and events such aswar can shape a family history. Cousin Tony

Rick, here is some information on the Eddy Rebellion. Benjamin Allen was not of the same Allan family as Col. John Allan .Interestingly, when the History of Botsford was written, Benjamin Allen is mentioned as being a "Scotsman," or from "Scotland." This is theresult of confusion between the Allen and Allan families. Also, Benjamin Allen was born in Scotland, Connecticut, then a part of Windham, CT. This fact only added to the confusion. The French built Fort Beausejour in 1750. Whenever the French and English fought in France and England they fought here also. In one of these fights the British won and took over Fort Beausejour, and called it Fort Lawerence. During the American Revolution sympathizers led by New England emigrant, Jonathan Eddy attacked the fort and took it over. This is known as the Eddy Rebellion. In the years between the 1755 Acadian expulsion and the newcomers arrival in the 1770s, much of the Chignecto territory was occupied by New England planters. Those who were true "planters" or farmers succeeded. However, a number were uninterested in the land and quickly became disenchanted. Many seized the opportunity and sold their farms, at bargain prices, to the canny newcomers. It is worth noting that in letters "back home" the Yorkshire settlers did not conceal their disdain of the New Englanders, calling them "lazy and indolent." More important, within months, rather than years, the Yorkshire settlers became embroiled in serious conflicts with some of their neighbors. The New England planters were in regular communication with their families and friends in Connecticut, RI and MA. By the early 1770s the storm clouds of revolution were gathering and the question on everyone's lips was simply: "Would NS, Canada be the 14th colony to rebel?" (The separate colony of NB, Canada would not be create d until after the revolution). Certainly New Englander Jonathan Eddy (1726-1804) and Scotsman John Allan(1746-1805) thought it should and gave active leadership to the revolutionary cause. The "Eddy Rebellion" was a complex event and has already been mentioned in several flashbacks . At this stage it will be sufficient to record that Eddy and his "Sons of Liberty" were unsuccessful in mounting an "all-out" rebellion on the Tantramar. Eddy, Jonathan (1727-1804): Eddy was born in Norton, MA. He was under John Winslow http://McCluer/Hist/BiosNS/1700-63/Winslow.htm when Fort Beausejour was captured <http://www.blupete.com/Hist/ NovaScotiaBk1/Part6/Ch02.htm> in 1755. During the months of May, 1759, through to November, 1760, Eddy was an officer stationed at Fort Beausejour, which by then the British had renamed , Fort Cumberland. With the war as of 1760 (at least in Canada) being over, Eddy was discharged. In 1763, Eddy with his family came from his native MA along with a number of other families from New England to accept an offer from the British authority of free lands and thus was to settle near Fort Cumberland. He was to became a leading member of the Cumberland community at Chignecto, serving as a member of the House of Assembly between the years 1770 to 1775. Eddy, however, was to be caught up in the American Revolution, being, one of the few New Englanders who had earlier come to NS, Canada to actively take up arms against the British.
