Shared note | From Tony Gagliani I had contacted the Alden Kindred Society around eight years ago, and was told that Joseph and Mary (Simmons) Alden did not have a daughter Mary who married Samuel Allen. The woman who corresponded with me, Alicia Williams, was the society genealogist . She said that Samuel Allen married Mary Pratt, daughter of Matthew and Sarah (Hunt) Pratt of Weymouth. Upon further investigation, I found that Samuel Allen did indeed marry Mary Pratt. Some genealogies on the Allen family have Samuel Allen married to Mary Alden. I don't know the sources of this information. As Samuel and Mary had a son Matthew and a daughter Sarah, but no son Joseph, Mary was likely a Pratt not an Alden. Maybe Mary was married previously to an Alden, and this was the source of the confusion. I haven't really looked into that possibility . I know that Mary could not have married a Pratt. This Pratt line is not the Mayflower Phineas Pratt line, but rather the Weymouth Macuth/Matthew and Elizabeth (Kingham) Pratt line. They came from Wendover, Buckinghamshire, England. I don't know of any Mayflower connections, but we do have an ancestor who came over on the Fortune (the ship that came after the Mayflower) to Duxbury. He was Francis Godfrey. His daughter Elizabeth Godfrey married John Cary. As for famous ancestors. ...I know we are related to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow through the Andrews family of Taunton, and to Ralph Waldo Emerson through the Waldo family of Chelmsford/Dunstable. We are related to President Taft (his mother was a Torrey) and both Adams presidents, and to Betty Ford (who was a Bloomer). Our ancestors Col. Hezekiah King and Col. Benoni Danks were infamous participants in the Eddy Rebellion . And we are distantly related to Anne Murray, who also descends from the Alexander and Margaret (McIntosh) Murray family. |
