Shared note

From a letter from John Bernard McKinnon.

"A little history. Battle of Culloden. After the defeat of the Scots Highlanders in 1745 the McKinnons and many of the other clans were driven from their homes and their lands by the English armies, all their domain and possessions taken from them. No wonder that they emigrated to Canada and the US. At this time 1775 the McKinnons were living on the Isle of Skye and some of its nearby islands Barra and Molls. The grants of land in PEI, Canada NB, Canada were given to those loyal to the British Crown."

Neil McKinnon and his brother Murdock came with their father from Scotland some time between 1784 and 1804 (they were young boys). The ship they came over on was the "Ark and Dove" Isle of Barra Clan McKinnon Catholic. This clan and some McKinnon Clansmen who lived on Isle of Skye petitioned the new British Lord (appointed after the battle of Culloden) for a small plot of land to build a small church, the original destroyed d by Protestant English soldiers the lord and retainers on horseback all armed. The lord in answer drew his sword and tried to cut the spokesman for the clan down. They escaped. That very night clansmen met and hired a ship The Ark and The Dove. The whole clan with members from Skye boarded the ship and sailed for America leaving the lord with no servants farmers etc. After months the Ark and Dove made landfall at NS, Canada then PEI, Canada where my fathers family decided to stay . Others stayed in NS, Canada plus some Kentucky etc. Many McKinnons are still Kentucky Mountain men. The compass binnacle made of brass with small whale oil lamp and original which was given (passed down) to my father who treasured it immensely when he came to Boston. It was the only thing he took with him. In 1929 we went broke lost many pieces and hoses plus great loss in stock market lost our own two homes in Dedham and new home in West Roxbury.
