Thomas worked for Earl Macclesfield. The family left London onboard the "Lord William Bentinck" 2 May 1844 arriving in Port Phillip Bay 22 Aug 1844.

Thomas and Jane Saunders were from Shirburn, Oxfordshire, England, which was a small village on the Oxfordshire/Buckinghamshire borders at the foot of the Chiltern Hills; it is unusual in that it is an enclosed village i.e. all the houses etc. belong to the Earl of Macclesfield, for whom Thomas Saunders worked as an agricul tural labourer. The chief buildings are the castle built in the lLith Century and the Church built in the 11th Century. The Estate was self-supporting and everyone of working age who lived on it was employed by the Macclesfield family; they were house servants, farm workers, gamekeepers, shepherds, carpenters, laundresses, carters, plumbers, wheelwrights, and all the skilled occupations necessary to keep an estate of its size running smoothly. There was a school, a shop and also a meeting hail. Their first five children, Herbert, Francis, Alfred, Philip and Walter were born at ShirDurn, Oxfordshire. The 18L11 Census for Shirburn indicated a Martha aged 65 years living with the family and we assume was Thomas mother. She died on the 1Lth f 1856 as recorded in the All Saints Church, Shirburn. The family sailed For Australia on board the sail ing ship Lord William Bentinck which left London on 2nd May l844 and arrived at Port Philip on 22nd August 1844, after a voyage of 112 days. The ships report on arrival indicated a well organised voyage with provisions, water and medical comforts of the best quality and abundant in quantity. The Shipping Records state that Thomas and Jane could read and write but the boys could not. (Although on the Birth Certificates of Susannah Martha and Andrew William, Jane signed her name with an x) According to Lloyds Register, the vessel was a square nqged, three masted barque, built in Nova Scotia in 1828. It was a wooden ship with a coppered bottom, and owned by J. Fletcher of London. The Captains name was Alfred Sainthiil. The barque made trips from London to Calcutta and Jamaica, and sometimes chartered to call at Cork to pick up migrants and passengers travelling to Australia. J.B. Were were the Melbourne Agents for Carter and Bonus, the firm who selected the migrants with agricultural experience from the midland counties of England. 216 passengers sailed and the contract for the passage was £18.11-.O per adult and £9.7O. per child. Thomas and Jane Saunders were married at Shirburn on the 7th of February 1835. Jane was a daughter of William (a labourer) and Susannah Smith and was baptised on the 29th of April 1818. We have documents showing Thomas and Jane lived in Collingwood, St. Kilda and Nunawading during their early years in Australia. Their family increased with the births of Sarah Louisa at Collingwood, William Augustus at The Falls, Elizabeth, Edmond John (Edward) and Ellen at Collingwood, and Susannah Martha and Andrew William at St. Kilda. Thomas Saunders was one of the first settlers to take up land in Melbourne, where he bought, on 28th August 18L16, three acres of land in South Melbourne. This land was described as a suburban 1ot for which a grant was given and entered in the Registy Land Purchase Records. On 19th March 1857, Thomas -icned a Lease to Mr. John Fithie over acres 2 rood and 17 perches in the Parish of Nunawadin CDuncy of Bourke at a entai of f27,1O.O per annum for iv years. Also, an Agreement da:ec 22na April P57 was made by Thomas Saunders thor living at Nunawading. with Casper Marks of the City of Melbourne, relating to land in Burnett Street St. Kilda, being part of Allotment 26 in the Parish of South Melbourne. A Promissory Note was given by Thomas Saunders to Casper Marks in the sum of £27.1O.O. Thomas had bought this land from Frederick Gonnerman Dalgety on 17th October 1853 and perhaps he required the above sums to help finance his re-settlement at Malmsbury. When the family travelled to Malmsbury by bullock wagon in 1857, the area was forest, with aborigines being numerous in the district. On the 15th of July 1857, Thomas Saunders bought 132 acres of farm land situated three miles out of Malmsbury, from Peter Davis for £603. Thomas sold the property to John Hookey on the 26th March 1881 for £1608. Although this acreage would seem small in our present times, in 1857 100-150 acres was considered to be a very viable farm area suitable for dairying, cropping, poultry etc. On the 1st of July 1874, Thomas Saunders obtained a Licence to farm 20 acres, being part of Allotment 16 Parish of Timmering, County of Rodney. His son Alfred and son-in-law William Pethybridge selected adjoining land at Timmering. In 1880, Thomas built a bluestone cottage Raleigh Street Malmsbury where he and Jane retired. had bought this land in 1869. That cottage is still standing and is classified by the National Trust. in He Thomas Saunders died on the 20th June 1892, Jane Saunders died on the 9th March 1898 and they are and buried together in the Malmsbury Cemetery. @HI22634@
