| Shared note | BIOGRAPHY Eric Delderfield: "Edward the Elder, son of Alfred the Great, continued the work of his father and began the reconquest of Danelaw. In 910 he defeated the Danes of Northumbria at Tettenhall in Staffordshire; he spent much of the next decade struggling to clear them from Lincoln, Derby, Nottingham, Stamford, and Leicester. Forts to secure the English frontier were built by Edward at Rhuddlan, Thelwall, and Manchester. By the end of his reign he exercised authority over all Danish lands as far north as the Humber. A permanent union with Mercia was established in 918-19 and he developed an administrative framework for the kingdom of England. In this respect Edward the Elder is the first monarch who may justly be described as King of England. though twice married, Edward's eldest son and successor Athelstan was born of a mistress."
