Shared note
Sir Richard de Tunstall, the lord of Thurland Castle, was a chamberlain to King Henry VI, and a commander during his wars. He attained hero status for holding Harlech Castle for King Henry, which was the last fortress to surrender to the Yorkists. According to C.H. Browning, there is a passage in Wauren's "Recuiel des Chroniques d'Engleterre" that tells of his carrying his king off the field to the safety of Bolton Hall after the battle of Hexam.
In about 1465, he was attainted and stripped of all his possessions by the Yorkist King Edward IV for being a Lancastrian; and his first wife, Elizabeth Frank, took a vow of chastity and became a "half-nun." He got a restitution in 1473-74 from the boy-king Edward V, and despite his Lancastrian history he was made a Knight of the Order of the Garter by Richard III in 1483.
