His reign was marked by his animosity toward his uncle's treasurer, Dunstan, whom he banished; Dunstan was later to become Archbishop of Canterbury during the reign of Edgar.  A measure of the lack of confidence in which Edwy

was held is given by the Northumbrians and Mercians, who renounced their allegiance to him to favor his brother Edgar [who did indeed succeed him as king]."
