BIOGRAPHY Eric Delderfield:

"The story of Saxon downfall [as kings of England] begins ominously with the murder of Edward the Martyr [who reigned only from 975-978]. The son of Edgar, Edward encountered opposition to his claim to the throne by supporters of his younger half-brother Ethelred. It was while visiting Ethelred at Corfe Castle in Dorset that Edward was murdered; his stepmother, Aelfthryth, is suspected of having had a hand in the affair so that her favored son Ethelred could become king [which he did]."

Edward's burial place is uncertain; it was may have been either Wareham or Shaftesbury.
