Shared note | BIOGRAPHY Eric Delderfield: "Athelstan was crowned King of the West Saxons and Mercians at Kingston-upon-Thames in 924. He never lost a battle, conquering part of Cornwall, Wales and Northumbria and defeating an alliance of Welsh, Scots, and Danes at Brunanburh in 937. He was the first king to have extensive contact with foreign monarchs, on religious and cultural matters as well as the negotiation of royal marriages. His religious devotion expressed itself in collecting quantities of relics and in neither marrying nor fathering any children. After a tireless life, he chose to be buried Malmesbury in Wiltshire, in preference to the usual masoleum at Winchester."
