Shared note | My grandfaather John (gug) as we called him was a very quite man. He fought in the 1st world war in the 24th battalion. His army number was in the 24thbattalion D company no 1680.Lance Corporal J.W. Cotter. He was decorated by the King on 2 occasions for bravery receiving the military medal and bar meaning receiving it twice. He saved many lives whilst wounded refusing to leave his commrades He volunteered as stretcher bearer. for more than 12 hours in spite of hios wounds was under heavy machine gun fire and shell fire. He continued his work and his devotion was thus responsible for saving many lives.Mt ST Quentin near Peronne. The next was for taking out a machine gun bunker ( I havn't all the details on that one ) under fire. Saving many lives |
