BIOGRAPHY S.R. Durand: "My mother's mother was always known as Ann; she never used her first name Mary, apparently having preferred her middle name. She was born May 14, 1830, on a farm near Ringwood, Hampshire, England, near the New Forest and a few miles from Bournemouth. When she was quite young, all of her older brothers had emigrated to Canada, and in letters to thier parents were urging them to come over, too. In the 1840's, the Wisconsin territory was being opened up for settlement, and many English settlers were going there instead of to Canada. When Ann Wiseman was 16 years of age in 1846, her father James Wiseman sold his farm in England and moved to Wisconsin. he purchased a farm near Ashippun in Dodge County, about twelve miles north of Nashotah, and the family attended church services at the Nashotah Mission Chapel on the seminary grounds. My great-grandfather, Bishop Jackson Kemper, had two elderly unmarried sisters, Jane Branson Kemper and Phoebe Eliza Kemper, who had lived with their father, Colonel Daniel Kemper, in New Brunswick, New Jersey until his death in 1847. At that time Bishop Kemper became responsible for the care of these sisters, and had them come to live with him in his large home, Bishopstead, near the Nashotah seminary. Needing help for the care of these sisters, one of whom was almost stone deaf, he persuaded Ann Wiseman to come stay at Bishopstead and look after them. My grandfather, Samuel Relf Kemper, had decided not to pursue an education at Columbia University in New York, and had joined his father in the West with an interest in becoming a farmer. He fell in love with Ann Wiseman, and they were happily married by Bishop Kemper on December 5, 1850, when she was 20 and he was 23 years of age. She was a beautiful girl, with naturally blonde hair and blue eyes. Over the years they had twelve children, ten of whom grew to adulthood. In a separate account, I have written some anecdotes about my Kemper uncles, aunts, and cousins. During the several months in 1860 that my grandfather was away on a sea voyage to recover his health, my grandmother carried on managing the farm, with the assistance of daily hired help. Mother told me stories of how Indians came through their property on Upper Nebahbin Lake, and how they would steal if given the chance. One time, an Indian was removing a red blanket he coveted from a clothesline, and my grandmother rushed out of the house and had a long fight, pulling the blanket away from him, until the Indian finally gave up and departed. My grandfather's older sister had married a professor at the Nashotah Episcopal Seminary in 1848, and they had settled in Bishop Kemper's house so she could manage it for her father. After Bishop Kemper's death in 1870, the Reverend and Mrs. Adams continued to live in Bishopstead. My grandfather and his brother did not receive their full shares of what should have been an even distribution of inheritances of furniture, silverware, etc. from their father's estate, since thier older sister kept most things in the house she occupied. However, one interesting anecdote is that my grandmother's oldest son, Jackson Kemper, one day at Bishopstead discovered a large old abandoned armchair in the hayloft of an unused barn. My grandmother, being short of chairs in her home, asked her sister-in-law if she could have it. Years later, this handsome large chair was a favorite of my mother's; in her old age she sat in it every morning close to a parlor window watching for the postman to come, and hoping to receive letters from her children and grandchildren. When I inherited this chair, my wife spent a whole day removing the old upholstery and straw padding before having it restuffed and reupholstered. This antique chair is now one of our most valued possessions, and has been appraised and insured for several thousand dollars. Mother somehow or other believed a story that it had been brought to America from Germany in 1741 by her great-grandfather, Jacob Kemper, and that his father, the hereditary military commander of Stalech Castle above Bacharach on the Rhine River, had been sitting in this chair on the Castle ramparts at the time of his death. This story seems a little too far out to me. Antique dealers have identified this chair as a similar type to the type of chairs made in either New York or Philadelphia in about 1750, and it is likely one of the very few, if any, in existence outside of museums today. [This chair was inherited from Samuel Relf Durand by either his daughter Jean Durand Rosling or his daughter Lucia Durand.] I have some very sweet and affectionate letters written by my grandparents to each other when he was away on his long European trip in 1860, and some from times when he was away from home in Milwaukee for a few weeks managing his produce commission business, which he had established after giving up farming. These letters reveal that they were closely devoted to each other, and to each one of their children. I can recall my father speaking many times with the highest respect and admiration for my mother's mother. She must have been a remarkable person to have brought up such a large family. She died of cancer on March 29, 1890, and was buried in the Kemper family plot in the cemetery at the Nashotah Mission.
