Shared note
The elder Simon Sackett sailed with his wife and infant son, Simon, from Bristol, England, aboard the ship "Lyon," on December 1, 1630. In his book "The Sacketts of America, etc." Charles Weygant describes the passenger sof the ship as "a little band of well-to-do Puritan colonists... Among the heads of families of this pioneer band were Roger Williams, Simon Sackett, John Sackett, John Throkmorton, and Nicholas Bailey." The ship's journey was difficult, with severe weather, and it did not arrive in Boston Harbor until February 5, 1631, after a nine-month voyage.
Colonial Governor John Winthrop and his deputies had selected a site on the Charles River, a few miles from what was then Boston. In the spring of 1631, Messrs Winthrop, Dudley, Bradstreet, along with Simon Sackett and five others, established on that site the town of Newtown by erecting "substantial dwellings." Simon Sackett's house was on "the north side of what is now [1907] Winthrop Street, in the centre of the block, between Brighton and Dunster streets." In 1636, the town was rechristened as Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Simon Sackett apparently continued to feel the ill effects of the hardship he endured on the sea voyage from England, and his health declined until he died in October of 1635.
