SAUNDERS ALFRED 5 AUG 1844 LORD WILLIAM BENTICK 2/3 200

Shared note

Alfred Saunders selected 340 acres at Timmering, then called Parkes Plains, in the early 1870's. With two brothers to help, he cleared a site for a dwelling and erected some fencing before returning to Malmsbury to harvest crop previously sown there, burying the tools they had used before leaving. He returned the following year to find white ants had eaten the handles off the tools. The Saunders property was called "Greenbank". A school was placed in the south-east corner of the property which the children attended. Amy, the eldest daughter of the family was a Sewing Mistress and assistant at the school. The school was closed and removed shortly after 1900. Early in the 1890's, after harvesting the crop at Timmering, Samuel Edward would take a steamer by way of Hobart to New Zealand (Return fare 5 pounds) and work during harvest time there. He did this for several years, then went to Western Australia where he stayed for four years, returning around 1899. While in Western Australia Samuel worked on properties in the Katanning area. For a holiday he travelled with a teamster to Kalgoorlie before the pipeline from the Mundaring Dam was installed. Water was scarce and expensive. He stayed there a short time supplying wood on contract to the miners. When Samuel returned from Western Australia, he and his brother Frederick leased land next to "Greenbank", growing wheat and cattle. They cropped "Greenbank" for their father using the same team of horses and plant on both farms. At this time Albert, the second son, was married and farming on his own account, later to select land at Henty New South Wales.

Alfred, the third son, travelled to New Zealand to work in the harvest and married there. His descendants are still living at Invercargill on the South Island. Sydney, the youngest son, worked for a Stock Agent in Kyabram before going to World War I. The following Obituaries were taken from the Kyabram Free Press: October 1st, 1918. "The death of Mr. Alfred Saunders occurred at his residence Kyabra'n yesterday morning removing a very old colonist. Born in Oxfordshire England 77 years ago he arrived in Australia when he was four years old. In 1874 coming from the Malmsbury district he settled at Tinnering and followed farming pursuits until seven years ago when he came to Kyabram to reside. Deceased was very widely known and well respected as a man of fine upright character and his death although not unexpected has occasioned feelings of regret among a wide circle of friends. For three years he had been in bad health and his indisposition increased during the past few weeks. He leaves a widow and family of five eons and four daughters vis Messrs. Samuel and Frederick who live at Timmering Albert N. S.
