BIOGRAPHY S.R. Durand: "John Jacob Kemper was born December 7, 1707 at Bacharach on the Rhine River in Germany. His father, Colonel Johann von Kemper, was the hereditary military commander of Stalich Castle, which overlooks the Rhine above Bacharach. John Jacob Kemper studied at Heidelberg University, but did not complete his studies there, for he was eager to eneter some active employment. His mother yielded to his wishes and purchased a small sailing vessel for him, as master of which he took freight for his own account at the cities on the Rhine. On July 14, 1736 John Jacob Kemper and Maria Regina Ernst were married in Caub. In 1737, Mrs. Kemper accompanied her husband to Coblenz, where their first child was born. One of the principal ladies of the city was godmother for the child, and named it Anna Gertrude, after herself. The second child, Maria Sophia, was born at Caub in 1739, and named after her two grandmothers. In 1741, a company of men called Newlanders were employed by shipowners in Holland to persuade Germans to emigrate to America. John Jacob Kemper was so infatuated with their representatives that, contrary to the emtreaties of his mother and friends, he converted all of his possessions into money and prepared for the voyage. He sold his hereditary right to be governor of Stalich Castle for 600 rix-dollars. His mother [apparently went to great lengths to discourage him from leaving] when she found that he was determined to do so and take his wife, whom she was attached as to a daughter. One of his children had also been born in his mother's house, [and his mother was loath to have her grandchildren leave, either]. Her only daughter was married and had settled far away, so she was left alone and never ceased to grieve for the loss of her children. John Jacob Kemper and his family embarked from Rotterdam on the ship Marlborough in 1741. Their voyage was lengthened many months by touching a part in England, where they tarried for some time. Maria Regina Kemper's youngest sister, Maria Christina, accompanied John Jacob and her sister. It was their intention to go first to the home of their brother, Matthew Ernst, in Rhinebeck on the Hudson River, where he had been settled for many years and had married a wealthy widow. In 1969, [I visited] Caub, but found the church closed and the pastor away on vacation, so I could not see the records of the church in which John Jacob Kemper and Maria Regina Ernst were married."
