S.R. Durand: "Colonel Johann von Kemper was an officer in the service of Frederick William, the "Great Elector," and of his son, Frederick I of Prussia. Since all officers of this army were noblemen, he must have been of noble birth. He was the hereditary military commander of Stalich Castle and Governor of Bacharach on the Rhine River. When the War of the Spanish Succession began in 1701, he was a colonel in the Army of Frederick I. This army of Brandenburg-Prussia rendered great assistance to the armies of England and Austria against the French. Colonel Johann von Kemper had been wounded in battle fourteen times during his career, and was finally so severely wounded that he was forced to retire on his pension. He died in 1712, after a lingering illness, while sitting in his easy chair on the ramparts of Stalich Castle. Colonel von Kemper's pension was continued after his death, and his widow, Sophia, was able to give each of their three sons a liberal education. The eldest , a physician, went to the East Indies. After many years, he returned as a man of large property and settled in Holland. The profession of the second son is not remembered. The third was our ancestor, John Jacob Kemper. There was a record, too, of one daughter in the family. I am afraid that it would be very difficult to trace the Kemper ancestry back into the 1600's. If anyone were to ever attempt it, I believe that the records of Caub and Bacharach could be searched at the Stadt archives in Coblenz."
