Shared note | BIOGRAPHY S.R. Durand: "My great-grandparents, James and Mary Ann (Legge) Wiseman, were married in 1815 in Ringwood, County Hampshire, England. They had a farm near Ringwood before coming to America in 1846, the journey to Wisconsin taking six weeks. According to James Wiseman's gravestone record in the Oak Hill Cemetery, in the town of Poygan (near Omro, WI), he died July 9, 1884, aged 87 years, 10 months, 25 days. This would make his date of birth August 16, 1796. Family records have recorded that James Wiseman's parents were Philip and Betty (Long) Wiseman. In 1970, I visited Ringwood, and spent part of a day with a Dr. R.H. Little, who had copied and typed all of the church records for six parishes in and near Ringwood for the British Society of Genealogists. We did not find a record of the baptism of a son of Philip and Betty Wiseman named James. Apparently, the baptism of James Wiseman was never recorded in the St. Peter and St. Paul church records in Ringwood, if his age according to the gravestone is correct, which it would appear to be. My mother and my sister, Lucia Wright, visited Ringwood in 1948. There they met Miss Ethel Wiseman, who operated a dairy farm, and was descended from James Wiseman's brother, John, through his son William who married Selena Watton. My grandfather, Samuel Relf Kemper, had visited William and Selena Wiseman when he was in England in 1860. Ethel Wiseman showed my mother and sister where James and Mary Ann Wiseman's farm had been before they sold it to emigrate to America. When they came to America in 1846, they established a farm near Ashippun in Dodge County, Wisconsin, about twelve miles north of Nashotah Episcopal Seminary, where my great-grandfather Bishop Jackson Kemper presided. One daughter, Mary Ann Wiseman, married Samuel Relf Kemper, [and went one to become my grandmother]. The other four daughters of James and Mary Ann Wiseman who came with their parents to Wisconsin married young men of English descent who established farms further north in Wisconsin, as new lands were opened for settlement. I can recall my mother telling me about having as a young child visited some of these aunts of hers with her mother, and having a happy time playing with her many cousins. Some time after his wife's death in 1866, my great-grandfather James Wiseman must have gone to live with his son Stephen, who had moved with his brother George and their respective families to establish farms near Omro, Wisconsin. He died there." Facts about this person: Alt. Born August 16, 1796 Hampshire Hatches, Hamps., England Source: Crutcher.FTW Medium: Other Date of Import: Jan 5, 2000 Alt.
