S.R. Durand: "Edward Abbott was born in Freedom, Outagamie County, Wisconsin on February 28, 1846. He was the fourth son of Elon Barnum and Eleanor (Webster) Abbott. He grew up on his parents' farm near Freedom. During the last year of the Civil War in 1864 when he became eighteen years of age, he tried to enlist in a Wisconsin regiment, but since his father and three brothers were already in the Union Army he was told that he was needed more urgently on the farm. One of his brothers died in the notorious Andersonville prison, where most Union prisoners of war survived only a very short time. When a young man, Edward Abbott went to Kansas, where he became a Baptist preacher and sheriff. He was noted for his great strength and endurance; he was well over six feet tall. After his marriage to Sarah Jane Schooley in 1872, they returned to Wisconsin where he was a Baptist clergyman in Brant, Calumet County. Later, he oversaw another church at Lodi, Columbia County, Wisconsin. In the early 1900's, he established a ranch in Northern Idaho. After being separated from his wife due to incompatibility when she went to live in Los Angeles, he moved to Montana, where he continued ranching until late in life. For a few years in the 1920's after giving up ranching, he lived with the Colvins on their wheat ranch near Binford, North Dakota; after that, he went to live in a retirement home for Baptist clergymen in Michigan. He died there in about 1932, when well over eighty years of age."

The story passed down in the family is that Edward Abbott was a very tall and striking gent, and that in fact, he became a bit of a ladies' man. The resulting infidelity caused the separation from his wife, although they were never actually divorced. Their daughters made small efforts to get their parents to see each other again. That apparently never came to pass, although they were in contact by mail.
