Shared note | S.R. Durand: "Rev. George Richardson was born July 21, 1838 in Northfield, Vermont. His parents moved to Norfolk, New York before he was three years old. A few years later they moved to Marengo, Illinois. He graduated from Northwestern University and entered the ministry of the Methodist church in the Rock River Conference in Illinois in 1861. After a short time in Illinois, he transferred to the Wisconsin Conference, where he was married August 25, 1862 in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. Soon after his marriage, he transferred back to the Illinois Conference, becoming the pastor of the Methodist church in Marengo. In 1864, soon after the birth of his son Elbert, he went with his good friend and former Northwestern classmate Rev. B.J. Vincent to Denver, Colorado. He took part in the dedication of the Lawrence Street Church, the first house of worship in Denver, of which he became the first pastor in the fall of 1864. The church and an adjacent educational institution known as the Colorado Seminary were both built in 1864. Rev. George Richardson was the pastor of the church for about eight months until he was appointed president of the Colorado Seminary, which later became Denver University. In this time he established Methodist meetings thirty miles west of Denver at Georgetown, at Idaho Springs, at Empire, and at Mill City (which later became Dumont). He remained in Colorado for two years before returning to Marengo, Illinois. During the time he was away, his wife and baby son must have stayed with her parents on their farm near Elkhorn in Wisconsin. In 1871, Rev. George Richardson returned to Denver for a short time because of poor health, but it was not until 1880 that he moved with his family to live there permanently. He bought several acres of land in Argo, then a suburb of Denver, where he built his home. He started a prayer meeting in his house, which grew, largely through his influence and liberality, to become the Argo Methodist Episcopal Church. He gave four lots for this church, which was built in 1886. After the death of his wife March 20, 1884 in Argo, he was remarried to Martha F. Franks, formerly of Doylestown, Ohio, on June 20, 1887. Apparently she was a lovely person, and Fred Ranney Richardson was devoted to his stepmother. She died on May 18, 1897. George Richardson was very much interested in farming, and became an extensive landowner in the Argo district. In 1886, he became vice-president of the Central Savings and Trust Company, and he held this position for the remainder of his life. He was also the guiding hand in the building of the Farmers High Live Canal and Reservoir Company, or which he became secretary. He was a well-known businessmen and financier, and a director of several companies, among them the First National Bank of Denver. At the time of his death, he was living with the family of his daughter, Mrs. Charles M. Deardorff. He left a large estate. Each one of his five children received an inheritance of more than $50,000, a huge sum in the early Twentieth Century. Rev. George Richardson died on July 4, 1909 in Denver. His death record in the Division of Vital Statistics in Denver is number 5907." Facts about this person: Record Change October 15, 1999 |
