Tombstone in Dr. Samuel Green's book "Epitaphs from the Old Burial Grounds, Groton, MA", says "Here Lyes the Body of Mr. Joshua Whitney Aged 83 years, Dec'd August 7th, 1719. It is quite possible that by the time that Dr. Green read the tombstone, weathering had made the single digit for the day unreadable, and his making it a 7 rather than a 1 represented a misreading. OTOH, the source for the death date in the VR's, which was also taken from the same gravestone, could just as well have misread the 7 as a 1. Provided by: Allan Green [email protected] |
