Shared note | Hyland Millen was a pioneer settler of Millen's Bay, formerly called Hubbard's Bay. He had emigrated to America in 1809 at the age of eighteen and lived in Millen's Bay the rest of his life. On 19 June 1844 he and J. Cross surveyed a public highway on Grenadier Island. The first mill at Cape Vincent was built on Kent's Creek, and the first bridge put across it was buiilt by him. He ran a stone hotel and tavern at Millen's Bay; the ruins of them were still in evidence in 1906. His occupation was listed in the 1860 census as "U. S. Revenue Officer" (see Child's Gazeteer of Jefferson County, New York and Nellie Horton Casler's Cape Vincent and its History). source: "Nicholas Hutchins of Lynn & Groton" by Marvin Clayton Hutchins Provided by: Allan Green [email protected] |
