- Generation 1
Joseph Whitney, son of Nathaniel Whitney and Abigail Josling, was born on November 27, 1767 in Grafton, Worcester, MA and died on August 14, 1843 in Grafton, Worcester, MA at the age of 75.
Shared note | Died aged 75y 8m 18d. A Joseph Whitney had his intent to marry Hannah Rice of Marlborough published in Grafton on 15 Oct 1797, at which point this man would be nearly 30. Further, a Joseph Whitney married Hannah Rice in Marlborough on 10 Dec 1797, indicating (but not actually stating in the VR) that it was this Joseph Whitney from Grafton. I think that the following "evidence" proves to my satisfaction that this is his marriage. Joseph Whitney had the intent with Hannah Rice above, and there were no children found in Grafton for Joseph and Hannah as parents. A Joseph Whitney also had an intent to marry a Polly Stockwell 10 Apr 1802, and did so around that time, as they had six children, the second of which was Daniel Stockwell Whitney, born 21 Nov 1804, clearly named either for his mother's family or a first husband (she was 34 by 1802). They also had a daughter, born 25 Aug 1812, WHOM THEY NAMED HANNAH RICE WHITNEY!. It is my contention that this clearly confirms the first marriage of this Joseph of Grafton to Hannah Rice, followed by the later one to Polly Stockwell. There is no death record for a Hannah Whitney in the Grafton VR's, BUT, there is an entry in Marlborough for the death of a Hannah Whitney, w. of Joseph, 4 Nov 1798, a. 21y. Since Marlborough is not only just a few miles away (about 10 - 12) from Grafton, but also the home of Hannah Rice and the place where the marriage took place, this Hannah is clearly the young wife of Joseph of Grafton who was later memorialized by the naming of a daughter with his second wife.
