Shared note | S.R. Durand: "In the book 'Old Elliot, Maine,' page 15, it states "James Sawyer married Sarah Bray of Gloucester who was born in 1651, [and] died April 24, 1727. He was born in England and came to Massachusetts with his parents, Edward and Mary (Peasley) Sawyer about a week before his death, James made a will which gave the names of his children then living His children named in his will were: Thomas, John, Nathaniel, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Mary, Sarah, and James." In the book 'The Sawyer Family of Elliotsville, Maine' by Fred E. Sawyer (mimeograph copy in the Los Angeles Public Library Genealogical Section, a 1st edition gift in 1945), it is recorded: "James Sawyer of Gloucester, Massachusetts was born about 1632, possibly at Lincolnshire, England, died at Gloucester, Massachusetts 31 May 1703. He probably married (1) Martha _______, and (2) Sarah Bray born 1651, died 24 April 1727 at Gloucester, daughter of Thomas Bray and Martha Wilson of Gloucester. He is said to have settled first at Ipswich January 1669 and was a weaver there and, later, before 1680, settled in Gloucester." James Sawyer was a selectman of Gloucester in 1696. He received grants of land, 60 acres on the west side of the Annisquam River in 1688, and in 1690 he bought additional land in that section of the town and established his residence there. His wife outlived him many years, and was living with her son Abraham in the family homestead in 1726. The estate was divided in 1752. Children, the first three probably born in Ipswich, were Mary, Thomas, John (born 1674), Nathaniel, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, and James." Facts about this person: Record Change October 09, 1999 |
