Shared note

Hitchcock (1948) states "There is no proof that Elizabeth Bates, who married Thomas Lawrence of Hingham, was the sister or daughter of a James Bates. Her parents are not known." This followed a review of The Genealogy of John Lawrence (1847), the genealogy of the Family of John Lawrence of Wisset, England (1857), and the History of Hingham (1899, all of which state that Elizabeth was the daughter of James Baytes of Dorchester. However, Pope in The Pioneers of Massachusetts (1965) says that "The will of Thomas Lawrence of Hingham made in 1655, mentions Edward B. of Wey. as the brother of his wife Elizabeth" Nicholson (Apr 1990) says that the will of Alice OSLINGTON BATE establishes that Margery Phillips was the mother of Edward BATES. The mother of Elizabeth BATES is less certain because her baptism is not recorded in Aston Clinton. Nicholson places her birth after Edward who was baptized 23 November 1606, therefore Elizabeth would be the child of the same mother. The fact that Elizabeth married a man born about 1715 would place her birth about the same time as his. It does not seem likely that she was born before 1605 making her about 10 years older than her husband, Thomas Lawrence.
