Shared note | Database originally had 3 May 1740, source not known (sombody "correcting" the dates again!), but the Westborough Vital Records show the 1741 date. The death record in the W. VR's has the additional entry "a. 66 'the 5 day of April past'", suggesting that Eli and the records didn't agree on his birthdate. OTOH, the entry for the 3 May 1741 date comes from a church record; although it does not specifically say so as it usually does, this date could be a baptismal date and the 5 April date may actually be his birthdate. From RW. Eli was the 11th and last child of Nathaniel and Mary Child. In the American Revolution he was a member of Captain Baker's company from Westborough. He was a prominent citizen, was Justice of the Peace and held other Church and Public offices. He had a large and well appointed farm, the finest in Worcester County. He was mechanically inclined and had a shop attached to one of the farm buildings where he made equipment and developed new machinery for his farm work. It was here that his son, Eli, received his first training for his later great achievements in the inventive field. He and Elizabeth Fay were admitted to the church.
