S.R. Durand, apparently quoting an entry in a town history or an obituary: "Joseph Durand was a man of character and intelligence and led a most exemplary life. The noted politeness which was attributed to his father was transmitted to Joseph in a marked degree. He was a gentleman to the "manor-born."(sic) He was devoted to his occupation of farming and, without doubt, had advanced thoughts on pomology. Both of his farms, the one at Chestnut Tree Hill, the other at the foot of the Great Hill, were well-stocked with peach and pear tree[s]. He was an extensive landholder and gave each of his children large tracts of land. In early manhood he was admitted to the church of his father: Presbyterian. The records call this church the 'Church of Christ in Derby,' which was the name used in the early days throughout the colony. In 1745 he joined the Episcopal Chuch and remained a faithful communicant throughout his life. He died in his 83rd year."
