Shared note

He was first member of Lawrence Family to settle in Rockland county. In 1723 he obtained from his father a farm in that part of Westchester county afterwards known as West Farms where he resided for some years. On March 16,1749 he purchased a 504 acre tract of land along the west bank of the Hudson river in Rockland township. On this property he erected a mansion known locally as the 'big house' where he continued to live until his death. He bequeathed his farm to his seven children: Thomas,Jonathan,Isaac,Daniel,Nathaniel,David, and Mary. The partition was made in 1786 at which time only four of the seven were still living. The lot containg the big house was given to his son Nathaniel but was later sold. It came back into the family by deed dated June 9,1794 to Jonathan Lawrence,Jr [nephew of Nathaniel] who in turn left the premises to his son Herbert who died some 15 or more years ago.(Notes by Winthrop Gilman dated 13 Oct 1898) His will dated 4 Mar 1773 describes him as Jonathan Lawrence,Jr. grandson of Jonathan Lawrence of the same place and names children Thomas, Jonathan, Samuel, William, Isaac, Daniel, Nathaniel, Mary, Ellison, Ann, David.
