Also known as Carl Henry. He enlisted, September 10, 1862, on the U.S. Steamer "Michigan" the only war vessel on Lake Erie. Was transferred the same month to the Mississippi squadron under Commodore Foote and served on the vessels "Clara Donaldson," "Marmora," "Brilliant," "St. Clair," and "Cincinnati" as a doctor's steward. He enlisted March 31, 1864 in C. E. 145th PA Vol. Infty and was transferred to Co. F. 53rd PVI. He went through the Wilderness campaign was at Cold Harbor, James river and the assault on Petersburg, where in the charge of June 16, 1864, he lost his left leg and was taken to Army Square Hospital in Washington D.C. He received his discharge June 8, 1865.

From 1867 to 1875, he was with the Penna, R.R. Co. as superintendent's clerk and assistant paymaster at Erie, PA., then operated a lumber yard until 1884, when he went to Cape Charles, VA. to take charge of a large truck farm, which had five plantations, some 2800 acres in all, requiring at times over 500 men, and producing in 1888, over $81,000 worth of produce. From oysters beds under his management, he shipped annually about 1,000,000 bushels of the bivalves, also founded the town of St. Charles and was its first Mayor. In October 1888, he returned to Erie, Pa where he resided on his "Jersey Meadow Stock Farm" on 125 acres. He was a Democrat, a member of the Knights of Honor, Royal Arcanum, A.O.U.W. He changed his name from Henry Carlton to avoid confusion with other Henrys. He took great interest in the progress and completion of these notes to his enery is due much of the data and all the portraits of his brance.
