He was in the battles of the Wilderness and Spottsylvania Court House, and he was wounded May 12, 1864. Charles was sent to Fairfield Seminary Hospital, had 30 days furlough, and was transferred to Army Square Hospital; returned to his regiment about September 10, 1864, and served in front in Petersburg. He was on duty along the line at or near Fort Hell. Voted the second time for Abe Lincoln at Fort Wheaton. His regt. belonged to the 4th Brigade, 1st Div., 2nd Army Corps, under General Hancock and was present at the surrender of General Lee. He was transferred to Co D and Co F, 53rd PA; discharged from the regt. at Harrisburg, PA, July 8, 1865, by General orders and placed on pension roll for gunshot wound in his left side. |
