Note | J. HENRY LAUN From Der Nord Westen, 20 Mar. 1902: Death in Kiel on Tues. morning of 64-yr. old Henry Laun, one of the eminent citizens of Kiel, following a stroke. The deceased leaves a widow and 4 grown sons. HENRY J. LAUN 1902 It is our sad job to announce the sudden and unexpected death of one of our respected citizens, took him from the side of his wife and from the middle of his relatives. On Tuesday morning at his home, Mr. Henry J. Laun died following a brain stroke which he suffered on Thursday afternoon. On the mentioned day he and his wife were at their son, Jacob's home for a noon meal, after which they returned home. While he was in the garden, he suffered from vertigo, and dragged himself into the house, where his wife found him sitting on the stairs. Dr Schaper was called and a stroke was determined. Sadly he did not recover, but he became worse, and on Tuesday morning he died. Mr. Laun first saw the light of the world near Erfurt, Thurangia, Germany on June 16, 1838 and had reached the age of 63 years, 9 months and 2 days. As a youth of 18 years, he came to America and settled in Mequon, Ozaukee County, where he started a furniture carpentry shop. In 1862 he married Katharine Zahn. In 1864 they moved to town Rhine and then to Millhome in 1867 where Mr. Laun operated a successful sawmill until 1894. There after he moved to Wausaukee where he and his son Henry, established a mercantile business, which last summer he left in the latter's hands and he and his wife returned to Kiel after a long working life to settle into a well deserved retirement. The marriage was blessed with six children of which four sons are still alive; namely Jacob from here, Louis of Elkhart Lake, Henry G. in Wausaukee, and Albert A. in New Holstein, who together with their mother mourn his death; as well as eight grandchildren. The funeral will take place on Friday with Pastor Vogelsang of the St. Peter Evangelical Church in the town of Rhine officiating, of which he was an earlier member, while county judge Ernst W Paulsen of Chilton will do the grave side service, which will take place at the Kiel Cemetery. To the survivors our sympathies. 1870 United States Federal Census Name: Henry Laun Birth Year: abt 1838 Age in 1870: 32 Birthplace: Prussia Home in 1870: Schleswig, Manitowoc, Wisconsin Race: White Gender: Male Post Office: Kiel Household Members: Name Age Henry Laun 32 Catharina Laun 27 Jacob Laun 6 Louis Laun 4 John Zaun 17 |
