Shared note | Richard was a descendant of Richard FitzGerald, who was born before 1035 in Normandy, and founded the House of Clare in England. FitzGerald was the eldest son of Crispin, Count of Eu and Brionne, who was a descendant of Charlemagne. He accompanied Willam the Conqueror to England in 1066, and later held 176 lordships and manors. One of these was Clare, in county Suffolk. This became his chief seat and caused him to become known as Richard de Clare. All of this and the succeeding information down to Alexander McGregor/Magruder, the immigrant, was found at a web site on the internet. There is no way of telling how accurate it may be. |
