He married Elizabeth Kortright, daughter of Laurence Kortright and Hannah Aspinwall, on February 16, 1786 in Trinity E Church, New York City, New York. Maria Hester Monroe, daughter of James Monroe and Elizabeth Kortright, was born in 1803 in Paris, France and died in 1804 in Oak Hill, Loudoun Co., Virginia at the age of 12 months.
